Distribution of Average Berth Hours 2023

Source: S&P Global Market Intelligence, Based on 4,864 port call events.

The time at berth, an indication of the dwell time, is a performance metric for container terminal efficiency. A large sample of containership calls reveals that the majority of calls last less than 25 hours, with an average of 22.7 hours and a median of 19.3 hours. The distribution of the berth-hours is a function of terminal performance and ship size, as large ships with significant container loads are likely to spend more time docked at the berth. Shipping lines require consistent terminal performance to help maintain the schedule integrity of their network.
