Regulation No. 913/2010 of the European Union required EU Member States to establish international rail freight corridors with the following main features:
- Co-operation between the (often national) Infrastructure Managers (IMs) in the field of train path allocation, deployment of interoperable systems, and infrastructure development.
- Provide enough capacity for freight transport, next to passenger transport.
- Promoting intermodality by integrating terminals into the corridor management process.
In late 2005 RailNetEurope (RNE) adopted a corridor management approach for the main European corridors carrying international rail traffic. In the meantime, all RNE Corridors have been replaced by Rail Freight Corridors (RFCs).
