Mergers and Acquisitions in the Container Shipping Industry since 2014
  • Mid 2014: Hamburg Süd took over CCNI (Compañía Chilena de Navegación Interoceánica) for 160 million USD;
  • December 2014: merger between Hapag-Lloyd and CSAV (Companía Sud Americana de Vapores) completed;
  • Late 2015: NOL/APL and CMA CGM agreed on the sale of APL container division to CMA CGM;
  • Early 2016: China Shipping and Cosco merged their activities to form China Cosco Shipping Group;
  • Mid 2016: Hapag-Lloyd and UASC announced their intention to merge;
  • Late 2016: NYK Line, MOL, and K-Line merged to form a Japanese container carrier ONE (Ocean Network Express). ONE effectively started operations in April 2018;
  • Early 2017: Hanjin formally declared bankrupt;
  • Early 2017: Maersk Line started the process of taking over Hamburg-Sud (take-over cleared by EC in April 2017 – take-over finalized in Autumn 2017);
  • July 2017: COSCO acquired OOCL.
