The maritime / land interface is a system of interaction between transportation systems and the actors managing and operating them. This continuum includes:
- Foreland. A maritime space is a space in which a port performs commercial relationships through maritime shipping networks, which represent services offered by maritime shipping companies in terms of port calls, capacity, and frequency.
- Port system. The set up of intermodal infrastructures servicing port operations organized as terminals.
- Hinterland. The inland space where a port maintains commercial relations. Gateways are granting access to inland corridors where each mode has technical constraints and is positioned to service specific inland markets.
