Global energy consumption underlines the enduring prevalence of fossil fuels, with limited changes as energy consumption increases with a decline in the energy intensity per capita. As of 2021, coal, oil, and natural gas accounted for 82% of energy consumption, compared to 86% in 2000. Renewables have increased from a negligible share to around 7% in 2021. This underlines that there is substantial room for decarbonization, but this transition is unlikely to take place in the short term without major disruptive effects on the cost and availability of energy.
