Built in the UK in 1865, El Mahrousa has carried the title of the largest (in length)yacht in the world unchallenged for a remarkable 119 years. This was the first yacht ever to exceed 150 m. length. Exceeding 160 m. length, the yacht Dubai broke this record in 1999; however, in the 21st century, yachts have become larger and longer.
Today, the list of sailing yachts over 150 meters in length totals seven. All top-10 yachts measure over 146 metres; in total, there are 17 yachts of 140 metres in length or more. Onboard features of these yachts include everything from submarines and helicopters to swimming pools, cinemas, and numerous other amenities.
Since October 2013, the largest privately owned superyacht in the world is Azzam. According to her shipyard, Azzam was designed to be 145 metres but grew to 180.1 metres in the “process of optimisation”. It accommodates 36 guests and up to 80 crew members. The behemoth was reportedly built for members of Abu Dhabi’s royal family. On board features include a gym, pool and a special “golf training room”. The yacht boasts an impressive speed for its size, thanks to its innovative water-jet propulsion system, which propels it at 31.5 knots or more. The German shipyard that constructed Azzam, Lürssen, currently holds a near monopoly in the construction of supersized superyachts, having delivered 14 of the world’s top 25.
This list of the top-10 yachts in length is expected to change in 2026, when the Norwegian yard Vard is scheduled to deliver REV Ocean, which at 194.9 metres will be the world’s largest superyacht. Her top speed is expected to be 17.0 knots, with power provided by two diesel-electric engines. She will accommodate up to 36 guests and 54 crew members, with a gross tonnage of 19,045 GT and a beam of 22 m.
When delivered, REV Ocean will join a fleet of 74 motor yachts longer than 100m.
