Busan New Port became operational in 1997 as an extension of the port of Busan. Over time, the port complex acquired six major container terminals, leading to an intense level of intra-port competition. Each terminal has an annual capacity above 2 million TEUs. The latest facility, Busan Container Terminal (BCT), is an automated terminal that became operational in 2022.
