At the beginning of 2025, the global RORO fleet’s median load capacity was 6.200 CEU (Car Equivalent Units), with just less than 200 vessels having a carrying capacity of 7.000 CEU or more.
Seeking the benefits of economies of scale, car carriers have recently built some of the largest Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTCs). Half of the 12 vessels with a loading capacity exceeding 8.500 CEU were delivered in 2024 or later.
Shipbuilding of RORO vessels is taking place in Asian shipyards, with Japan being the country where over 40% of the total fleet has been built. South Korea and China are also active; approximately 20% of the global fleet has been built in each of these countries. In Europe, Croatia, Germany and Poland are the countries active in building PCTCs.
