Many of the world’s most traded goods require specialized maritime transport conveyances. The first two most important goods are crude and refined petroleum, which requires tanker ships and specialized terminals with tank farms. Cars are also among the most traded goods in terms of value, implying the deployment of a fleet of car carriers and the prominence of RORO facilities. A wide range of commodities, such as vehicle parts, are carried in containers. High-value goods, including integrated circuits, computers, and pharmaceuticals, are more likely to be carried as air cargo. Thus, the scale and value effect on global trade influences the selection of maritime transport modes and terminals.
